What in the heck is going on with PJ?
He gets in a confrontation as a RLSH and ends up in a street fight as Ben Fodor? I'm absolutely confused at this point.
This is something that not only walks the 'gray line' of ethics but crosses it a couple of times as broken morals. I didn't know whether to cheer for him or to get angry...
...and to be honest, I did both.
When it was over, I thought about it amd realized that the fight had nothing to do with honor, helping another, protecting another and/or their property, or even inspiring those watching. I simply found myself watching it because it felt like a superhero fighting a super villain... and the truth was, it was two guys fighting for a crappy reason.
PJ has been into the thick of things and on the street for too long, especially when he has lost control on this level.
He is showing some of the same decision making as soldiers who have been in combat a day too long. When they first go to war, they fight for the ideal and the goal that is greater than themselves. Over time, battle fatigue sets in, and events that happen on a mission tend to become internalized and personal... the big picture becomes blurry and lost.
The response?
The response is an action that is usually personal and vengeful. It becomes a release for what has built up in the soldier as the shadows blocking his view to the larger goal, which happens to be his true mission; the true mission that serves the ideal that brought him to the war.
Phoenix has all of these symptoms in this video. He did not know that guy. This situation could have been de-escalated, the police were there. It did not matter if he could have beat him or not, he wasn't attacked without a way to defend himself or displace himself. He CHOSE to go back to fight the guy.
If the guy was drunk and racist... did THIS solve the problem? Will that guy wake up tomorrow feeling better about his encounter with a black (African American), masked, Real Life Super Hero who knocked him out?
Did Fodor (PJ) protect anyone that will remember his heroic actions or did he just gain a new racist, ashamed, and angry enemy that knows his real name?
In general, I have a lot of respect for Phoenix Jones. As a military person, I completely understand his disposition and how fragile control can be in the heat of an event. I understand his fatigue. BUT, these are NOT reasons to do what could have been prevented, as seen in this video... especially, when being out there on the street is NOT his legal occupation.
Policeman have doctors and counselors made available for them in cases of mental fatigue. They have the strength of their organization behind them. PJ has himself.
He is pushing himself so hard to define Phoenix Jones to the world, until he can not see what Phoenix Jones is evolving into. Phoenix strived to be the HERO that he had always envisioned the public wanted.
This act bent the law, which is a key attribute of the ANTI-HERO. Hopefully he'll realize that, because after that is the VIGILANTE and that is the one who walks dangerously close to the VILLAIN.
I pray for Phoenix and I hope he gets his head straight.
