The Bastard Child Called SUCCESS
Life is short while living is long. If you need proof, ask those who endeavor for something greater than themselves. Ask those who work not to be forgotten; in fact, ask those that become our heroes, or… ask a man on death-row.
Success is a bastard.
It’s the orphan of a Mindset and Performance, the step-child of a Deadline, and the enemy to Failure.
Everyone wants success, but its greatness depends upon how much we are willing to struggle for it. Some learn over time that small successes are enough for them to be happy, while others will accept nothing less than becoming a ‘remembered’ component of history.
'Success is not good or bad. It simply is what it is.'
The mother of success, Performance, is made up of Motivation - Ability, Effort, and Environment. If one wants to accomplish a task, the first thing they need is the Ability to perform what is needed. If an ability is natural, aka. God-given… we tend to call that Talent. If it is not, then one will need to train, we call that, ‘learning a Skill’. Either way, both Talent and Skill need Effort in order to grow.
Effort is nothing more than doing whatever it takes to accomplish a task… PERIOD! Effort creates movement, while movement creates displacement… Displacement from stagnation and displacement from where you are. Effort helps to move one into an Environment in which a chosen task can be accomplished.
If an artist wants to create, Effort will make that person get paper and a pen. If a musician wants to record a record, Effort will push that person into a studio.
The Environment is equally as important as both Ability and Effort. It provides the tools and resources for one to function as well as the surrounding to nurture the task desired.
All of these combined, Ability, Effort, & Environment, create Motivation and motivation dictates Performance. Performance is critical to giving birth to Success.

The father to Success is Mindset.
Mindset is all about getting your 'head straight'. It is made up of Focus, Discipline, Will, Courage, and Fearlessness.
While some components are obvious:
Focus – Stay on task!
Discipline – Knowing what needs to be done and following through
Will – The mental trigger to Effort
Courage & Fearlessness are a pair of bad children worth mentioning in detail.
Courage is made up of Fear, Awareness, and Action. It is much different than Fearlessness, one that has no fear. One can be Fearless without action and yet, Courage cannot exist if action is not present.
Being afraid makes one hyper-sensitive to Risk. This is also what separates Fearlessness and Courage by outlining their approaches towards this. The Fearless approaches Risk logically, which can result in the same response multiple times. While the Fearless is sensitive to Risk, it never become ‘hyper-sensitive’ towards it, hence it doesn’t experience the extremes, such as Horror or Terror. Fearlessness is derived from training.
The Courageous knows fear. Fear is a more human emotion, when applied to disgust, it becomes Horror. When pushed to extremes, it becomes Terror. Both of these dictate how the Courageous will act when faced with both of these. The results can vary as much as the intensity of the fear. The key thing is that there IS action towards the Risk.
Fear can be combatted with Knowledge and Wisdom, both of these are the foundation to Confidence. As Fear is negotiated and decreased, Fearlessness rises in strength and confidence is born. Note – NO ONE is absolutely Fearless.
'Risk is nothing more than the tool of the enemy, the fearful believes that only Failure wields it. Failure attacks one’s Mindset.'
This is why a Deadline is so powerful. Deadlines personify Failure to the Fearful and Opportunity to the Courageous. A Deadline validates one’s position in reference to success. It either produces Accomplishment or the lack of. It is quantifiable. Deadlines are bullets added to Failure’s weapon called Risk.
‘People are remembered by their Accomplishments or their failures to have any.’
Procrastination is a bulletproof vest holding back the impacts of Deadlines. Each strike weakens the vest and damages the wearer. Sooner or later, the vest will fail and the Deadline will expose the truth. This is why it is such an effective filtering tool in business and in life.
Success is not mysterious. It is as old as Failure and intimately chained to it as one of the natural balances in the universe. While Failure is promised, as much as sins and death, Success is not. Success must be earned. This is why Success has value; this is also why each person’s amount dictates how valuable they are.
Those that acknowledge that value treat them a certain way based upon it; we call that Society.
Success is simply the result of a Mindset and Performance applied towards a given task.
'Success is NOT good or bad… it simply, is what it is.'
