Chapter 1
Sasha Gardner sang with the Rock of Ages choir for five years as lead alto. Blessed with a Godly smile, gym fit body and a personality that would charm the devil. Gardner’s mother always said to her daughter, “you are going to hell if you do others wrong.” Gardner would scoff, laughing at her mother, a drug addict and local bed partner to whomever could pay for her next high.
Five years earlier after accepting an invitation to visit Rock of Ages, Sasha Gardner gave her life to God that day and two years later, she didn’t charm the devil, but won her way into the heart of Deacon Bellamy Jones. Within 6 months, Sasha Gardner became Sister Sasha Jones.
Bellamy Jones, fifteen years her senior was not in the best of health. Having been diagnosed with three clogged arteries, Jones had a triple bypass the day before his young wife joined the church. Three months into their marriage, Jones was diagnosed with Diabetes. Four months after, Jones was preparing for prostate surgery. While serving in Vietnam, way before his bride was even thought about, Jones had his big toe amputated from frost bite while serving a tour of duty Germany in the Army. Deacon Jones lost his wife to cancer as he was going through his bypass surgery. Two adult kids. One daughter, a doctor in California and a son serving in The Middle East. Needless to say Deacon Jones was a blessed man, but craved companionship.
Deacon Bellamy Jones did not hide the fact money was not a problem. When pastor wanted to have a church picnic, it was Deacon Jones who funded the whole event, to include two surprise guest from the Miami Dolphins. Jones and the director of player personal played on the same team in high school. Jones his quarterback, his friend, an all-state wide receiver. He made it big, while Jones lost both parents in a car accident and had to raise his brother and sister.
Deacon Bellamy Jones worked as a Longshoreman for over thirty-five years and when he walked away due to illness, Jones had saved close to 2 million dollars in account and 1.2 million in his retirement account. So when Sasha Mack shifted her thighs slightly open from the choir stand giving the 68 year old a peek from the amen corner, Jones was hooked. Six months later Pastor J Bolles said those magic words, “I now pronounce you man and wife.”
“Sister Jones, a mousy voice squealed. “Girl, you remind me of Tamela Mann when I hear your voice belted out words of salvation! The imposing woman said, crowding Sasha’s space. Making sure she didn’t escape.
“Sister Jones, she continued. “Sister Jones you should be on TV.” This time giving a little shove to Sasha’s shoulder in a gesture that one day the singer might make it.
“The Bobby Jones Gospel hour, you know what I mean? One day you will be famous.” Sister Audrey Stanback remarked. Stanback, was towering woman standing six foot and one inch tall, thick braids, bulky, and a number 42 tattoo on her arm. Her old college number. Without heels, Audrey Stanback looked down on people. With heels, Stanback looked like a middle linebacker.
Branded as “The Church Internet,” Stanback kept Facebook and Twitter as close to her as Matthew and Mark. Audrey Stanback played on a championship high school basketball team earning a scholarship to Florida A&M University where she fell in love with the football quarterback, got pregnant leaving school with a kid and no degree.
“Thank you Sister Stanback, Sasha Jones gave Sister Stanback a quick wave moving into her 2016 grey Range Rover a present from Deacon Jones just because.
Twenty minutes earlier Sasha Jones had given her husband a kiss on the cheek as he made his way to count the day’s collection.
“Are we going to our usual place for dinner, Dek? Sasha asked.
Jones turned almost embarrass to answer. Jones nodded slowly, saying, “Sure.”
The sun burned down on the parking lot asphalt triggering Sasha to remove her robe. With the press of the key fob, the rear lift slowly groaned upward. For some reason, Sasha somewhat irritated not only by the over powering Sister Stanback but the uncaring nod by her husband. Was he not feeling well? If he was, Jones chose not to tell his wife. As she walked to the rear of the vehicle unzipping the robe Sasha Jones felt a spike of uneasiness. An abandon house once used by crack users gave Sasha bad signals. It held a mystic presence that reminded her of the house she grew up in. A stiff wind blew dry leaves on her $140.00 shoes. Jones frowned.
“Oh, Lord, she fussed. “I can’t get dirt on these shoes. It would be a pain to clean them.” The shoes purchased from an on line account Deacon Jones solely set up for his wife to buy the best.
“No wife of mine will not go around looking like some ghetto hoochie,” Deacon Bellamy Jones told his young wife.
“Oh Lord, be my rock, the singer chimed. Sasha Jones never saw the shadow in the house. She took a minute to take off her robe feeling refreshed. Pink fluffy bedroom slippers lay neatly next her purse and the box that housed her $140.00 shoes. The shoes were treated better than some children. As she reached down to remove the treasures, Sasha’s attention never wavered allowing the shadow to easily move behind. Within seconds Jone’s eyes fluttered, rolled to the back of her head into darkness.
