I have just discovered a website dedicated to Real Life Superheroes and began to follow their growth. These individual have their own sub-culture and should be saluted for the work that they are doing. Many of them are involved with feeding the homeless and helping the poor. Some actually go out to protect the innocent and 'foil' crime.
All of it is giving and some of it is dangerous (some have been beaten and shot).
I have been posting with these guys for a little over a week and involved in some GREAT topics that I want to share on our forum here.
There is this one member that I have communicated with who is very motivated about becoming active in the hero community. The challenge is the path that he is interested in taking. Many other heroes have given him advice, while the small differences within the advice and approaches can decide whether an individual breaks the law, helps the wrong person, does the wrong thing, or in the worst case, lose their life.
I approached it with the following post that I created on their board...
------
There are basically 3 types of heroes out there intent on effecting change within the lives of others as well as their environment.
1. PROACTIVE
2.DEFENSIVE
3. REACTIVE
It is important to understand that each of these hero-types act, think, plan, and function differently. I've noticed this a lot all throughout the forum when one hero asks an open question to receive opinions. I have a military background, which I'm quite sure many who have read my writing have put together. One thing in common about military trained individuals is our stern belief in MISSION. In almost all of my post this is brought up over and over.
Your mission lays the foundation of action to your house of ideas and beliefs, while the type of hero you choose to be dictates how your house will be built.
A PROACTIVE hero is one who embraces change and actively goes out to implement it, whether it is giving to the poor, reading to children, or bashing some criminals. Their techniques are often carried out on the offense, bold, and planned.
The DEFENSIVE hero is often confused with the Reactive hero. The difference is in the timing of an event. A Defensive hero is one that seeks to defend the standard way of life, living, or existence of their targets. They are often referred to and seen as Guardians, Defenders, or Protectors. If they are defending people, they consider them Innocents or Civilians and make it their priority to ensure their safety during a time of need. Some defend events by watching over its execution while prepared to deal with issues ranging from troublemakers to natural disasters. Some defend objects or locations ranging from a historical building, statue, etc. to something as simple as cars in a parking lot. The Defensive hero often engages in patrols in order to carry out his missions.
Finally there is the REACTIVE hero… this is the person that goes into action AFTER an event has occurred. They are often referred to as Inspectors, Detectives, Sharp, etc. This individual specializes in putting pieces together to figure out the truth. They are masters of deduction and investigation. Once a source has been identified, they take action against it. The Reactive hero can be the guy in the suit who pulls over to fix your broken down car on the side of a highway by finding a loose wire or the guy who locates your missing jewelry from the gang who robbed you a few days earlier.
Those are the big three types. The key to success is to be not only focused, but clear in your thoughts, actions, decisions, and beliefs. Remember your primary mission and choose the best type of approach to accomplish it. Some heroes swap through the types based on what they are getting into, while others are grimly fixed on mastering one type to perfection. Neither way is better or worst than the other. It comes down to preference.
