I've been feeling a little bipolar with my writing lately.
Sometimes I can churn out pages and pages on a keyboard because I'm a fast typist (110 wpm if anyone cares ), but occasionally I come across an obstacle I like to call Blank Page Syndrome.
Blank Page Syndrome isn't like Writer's Block where the block just doesn't allow you to come up with ideas and inhibits your creativity. No, BPS is when you know exactly what's supposed to go on that page but then your fingers just absolutely refuse to type it out. For years I've been struggling with this syndrome, and in case anyone else has as well, here is my number one tip:
Go with the classics.
When I spend hours typing on a computer I'm usually pretty productive. Up until I shut the computer off for the night and then come back to it later. When I return to the keyboard I find that my work is somehow stunted by the infinite white space on Microsoft Work after my last punctuation mark. For the life of me I can't figure out why this is, but there is one thing that tends to help a little, and that's abandoning the technology all together. Even if it's just for a page.
Sometimes the pen is just mightier than the laptop.
I'm not sure why, but there's just something reassuring about writing the old fashioned way. A sturdy, reliable pen against a notebook filled with fresh paper can sometimes be the handy cure for Blank Page Syndrome. Though, I have to admit sometimes switching back and forth between the two can have an adverse effect at times, and at that point I have to turn my efforts towards another form of creativity; in my case it's usually graphic design.
What helps you with BPS? Or am I the only crazy person whose afflicted by it?
