I'm (ahem) borrowing, shall we say, a page from Redmages book.
Here is a list of Movies and Books to inspire the Science fiction authors.
Movies
*disclaimer*
Yes, the a lot of these are no-brainers, but I would be remiss not to include them.
1. The entire Star wars universe...both books and movies.
2. The entire Star trek universe...books, movies and tv series.
3.Stargate....movies, and tv series.
4.Enemy mine. Yes its an older movie, but one of the best for an excellent interaction between human and alien enemies.
5.The Last Star fighter.
6.V....either the old or the new series...
7.Battlestar Galactica...either the old or the new series.
8. Buck Rogers.....YES I know its hokey, but it is always a good thing to explore the roots of science fiction and to analyze how its developed over the past century.
9. Journey to the Center of the earth. This should be READ. Then watch the newer version of the movie.
10. The Core. While this isnt a space movie, it definitely falls into the realm of science fiction.
11. Babylon 5....television series.
12.Farscape...television series.....started out strong but seemed to degenerate into relying on lots of sexual themes...sort of ruined it for me.
13. Godzilla.....any and all.
14.Jurasic Park...read the books. The movies are good but soo much is left out and rearranged for the sake of the movies.
15.Dinotopia.....books, movie. The movie is LOONNNGG but good.
16. Reign of fire.....yes dragons fit into scifi....though this realistically could be called a fantasy crossover.
17.The red planet
18. Planet of the apes...old movies and new one.
This is by no means a diffinitive list. Please feel free to add to it. But so far we have been soo extremely generous in our support and inspirational ideas for fantasy, we need to do the same for science fiction as well.
Balance is always important!
Happy writing!
