While sitting around with two women at my job, during lunch, we got into the in-escapable conversation... debate... argument on compatibility versus love.
Now, the magic of the comments mostly came from the ages of the combatants... er... uhm... I meant, 'conversationalists.
One woman was turning 30yrs old in a couple of months, worried about marriage, tired of dating, and ready to have kids. The other woman was in her 40s, done with marriage (even though she was still married), tired of 'not' dating, and struggling to raise her kids.
Age and youth sat at the same table with me in the middle listening to each woman comment on the statements of the other while speaking mostly to themselves.
The young one argued that dating showed her that men wanted one thing so it was more important to get the one with the most 'toys'. She called him... compatible.
The other argued that love is fleeting and is never promised to stay, but always worth fighting for even if you have a bit. Her point was, when your partner doesn't have the spark while you're busy trying to keep things lit, the fire will die. She said something about a dying flame was worth more than the cold embers of mere compatibility.
This comment stunned me because it was somewhat poetic and 'off-the-cuff'. I pulled out a pin and started to write down the key comparisons that each one brought up.
When I was done, I looked at their statements and it became a poem... no, more of a freewrite. It was something that I would expect from a teenager in High School and yet, something that related to a young woman turning 30 and an older woman living in her 40s.
I discovered that the stuggle between compatibility and love is ageless!
Here are the notes that I took:
COMPATIBILITY versus LOVE
COMPATIBILITY is controlled by logical thinking and facts.
LOVE is the wild card that makes you do dumb things that doesn’t make sense
COMPATIBILITY is processed by the brain
LOVE is processed by the heart…
COMPATIBILITY is all about satisfying your needs
LOVE is all about your wants
COMPATIBILITY looks forward to repetition and pattern
LOVE wants all of those ‘first-times’ to be fulfilled with this new person…
COMPATIBILITY becomes stronger with age
LOVE makes you weak
COMPATIBILTY becomes more and more the focus of one with a broken heart
LOVE provides hope and has the ability to make one smile for no dang reason at all…
COMPATIBILITY is a science
LOVE is an art
COMPATIBILITY failed… is disappointment
LOVE lost leads to hurt…
COMPATIBILTY has to me remembered
LOVE can’t be forgotten
