“And so the foundation quaked as the empire learned that a sword blade is as sharp on one side as the other.”
The strength of the Roman Empire was also the weakness that created the cracks in this mighty stone. Politics drew blood with lies. Military drew blood with force. Religion drew blood with faith. Politics, military, and religion were the foundation components of the Roman Empire. Everything with the Empire and with the right to being Roman had an acknowledgement of these things.
Rome began as a republic and conquered many lands with its highly organized military forces. Victory after victory was attributed to their faith in their gods. Rome expanded far enough to include the northern regions in Africa and the southern regions in Europe. During this time, Rome existed as one.
The internal and external environments of the empire began to take its toll during the third to fifth century. The rise of Christianity was a very influential force with regard to the decline of Rome.
Roman life was originally based upon pagan traditions and the many mythological renamed gods of the Greeks. When more people began to accept Christianity and to refuse the acceptance and following of the traditional gods, this caused a ripple effect in one of the most important components in the foundation of the empire.
A change in religion and faith can be devastating on a people.
This caused divisions amongst the internal areas of Rome. Faith affected politics, as well as the mentality of the basic soldier and his family. Christianity provided more rights for women, while the other religions didn’t. Women having more rights and involved in more activities, such as religious teaching and discussions greatly affected everyday life within the empire.
Politics which was based on the power of social stratification and debate had to now recognize that this religion no longer favored the rich and wealthy. Money no longer ensured a place in heaven. Wealth no longer provided favor from the almighty God of, what was then, the quickly growing touch of Christianity. With the ongoing internal confusion of faith, force, and lies creating havoc amongst the people of Rome, it made it that much more difficult to defend the great boundaries of the empire from the Germanic barbarian tribes. The empire was destined to divide.
Rome would grow no more.
