Tonight while driving home on I-95, I saw something amazing, scary, and sad. It happened about 20 minutes ago (3:15am to 3:20am) so I'm still hyped up about the entire incident.
I was traveling around 75mph and saw a parked SUV on the side of the highway with the passenger door open. I began to slow down to change lanes when some man came running out of the woods, beside the highway.
He literally ran into the highway without looking around, then turned around to run back towards the parked SUV. I swerved around him and slowed even more, just as I saw a naked woman running out of the woods screaming.
I was shocked!
Even with me slowing, I was already hundreds of yards away. I pulled over to the side and called 911, who in turn contacted the Highway Patrol and took my information.
I asked if they would call be back to let me know if the woman was okay.
I got home a little while ago and they finally called me back saying that they couldn't find the vehicle.
I instantly began asking a million questions about traffic cams or if anyone else called in. There was very little traffic at 3am. I found myself worried about a screaming naked woman that I have never met.
The officer on the phone spoke in a nonchalant manner and simply said that there's nothing they could do. She said that she just wanted to update me on the status and they were no longer going to pursue anything with it.
She then hung up.
I felt... and still feel... empty. This lady looked like she had just been assaulted and was terrified. She looked like she needed help desperately and this could have been her chance to be saved.
Now, I've learned that the parked vehicle was gone and she was basically on her own.
One cannot help but to have a ton of 'What if?' questions for this nightmare scenario. I have no idea what could have been done, but I do know that I will be watching the news in the near future, praying that I don't discover any foul play involving a mysterious woman.
