This is an overview, not a review. Since the movie was just release and not many have seen it. I just wanted to touch on some points about the movie without talking about the details.
I was fortunate enough to be at one of the theaters showing it on Wednesday. You must see this movie in IMAX 3D. I normally hate 3D, but this is the exception. The movie surpassed my expectations, as did the previous. I saw so many different people in the audience, not just trekkies, but people who enjoy a great story, young and old alike, rekindling the fire of the franchise. It managed to keep the canon and the new storyline so close that you understood why things were happening the way they did. I also enjoyed that they allowed non-Treks to dive into the characters while explaining some of the Starfleet background.
This makes movie #12 and I highly recommend that is you are not a Trekkie or if you haven’t see the other movies to go back and watch them especially the #’s 2 and 3, along with episode #23 called “Space Seed” in the first-season of the of the original series, you know, the one with William Shatner’s Kirk.
By no means do I consider this a Star Trek reboot. Where comic books companies like Marvel and DC have done with their movies, this is still Star Trek, just that something happened and now it’s taken a different path than when it first started. So I see it as a change in the ‘historical archives’. Think of it like this… In the movie Star Trek: First Contact, when the enterprise travels through the temporal vortex to stop the Borg from using time travel to assimilate earth, as they pass through the vortex, they see earth change to one now populated by all Borg, reflecting the change that was made when the Borg in the past changed Earth’s future. Same concept.
There were subtle notes to point out in the movie that were apparent and there to keep the audience informed while keeping the pace of action in the movie flowing. Keeping up with reference that you are in an alternate reality because of the previous movie, helps to remind those in the audience understand who, what, why, where and when.
Please understand that the title was what it was to maintain the “WTF and Holy Crap” gasp I heard in the audience. Into Darkness could mean many things to many people. To me it meant that dark part of humans…the savage part. The part that wants constant battle and war and death to appease the darkest part of ourselves. Hell, it could also mean the dark ass Federation-Class Dreadnought starship that was awesome and did amazing damage and only needed to transform to be any better.
Just remember that Khan is mentally and physically superior to an ordinary human, as he was genetically altered. He sees himself as better and for good reason, he is. He is one of Science Fictions greatest villains. The role was well played and I enjoyed that they kept to the story and characters personality as much as possible in the alternate timeline. As I mention before, this is just another outcome to the same story, so unless something life changing happens to a character, they will be the same person.

Bringing in Dr. Marcus, Kirk’s love and mother of his son, causes minds to wonder where the story of her and Kirk can now go.
Diving in to the hate Khan has for the Federation explains a lot and more to look forward to in medical breakthroughs and possible future escapes.
A deeper understanding of Vulcan’s and Spock’s emotions bring me back to Data and his quest for humanity.
Wish I could go into more, but it would completely ruin the movie, so I’ll wait a while and follow up. I look forward to comments and follow-ups on this topic once more people have seen it.
