Movie Review - The Avengers

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

The is one of those, "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" moments... please be patient with me!!

Went to the midnight showing and EVERY theatre was FULL!!! I saw freaks, weaks, meeks, and treats... and I felt happy!! There was a guy dressed as Thor, a trillion Captain Americas, Tony Stark Loyalists, and a few funky whinos that smelled like the Hulk!! Life doesn't get any better!!

Ok - okay, down to business...

This is what I scored Avengers based on the scale of 1 to 10:

Concept: 9 - Aliens attack Earth (New York to be exact - What is it about New York?!?), heroes team-up, massive battle, mankind saved... THE END! while this is NOT a new concept, the complexity of merging mortals, Gods, Aliens, and superhumans into ONE story that flowed somewhat natural made this concept something that is unique unto itself.

Worldbuilding: 10 - This was another DIFFICULT arena to play in, because of the components introduced in the concept. We are talking the merging of real-world physics and science with alien technology, magic, and superhuman abilities. We believed that the ABSOLUTE human mortal with the bow (Hawkeye) could make those impossible shots consistently and the beautiful female assassin fighting in tights could take on alien warriors in armor by flipping, kicking, and jumping around.

Not to mention, she didn't even mess up her make up!

I don't care WHAT anyone thinks... ALL OF IT WAS POSSIBLE!!!

The flying battleship, un-depletable energy sources (I guess BP was too late to the party!), and the long-haired Asgardian 'girl' with the hammer are just a few more things that were made BELIEVABLE by this wonderous gift bestowed upon us mere nerds!! The worldbuilding was impeccable!

StoryTelling: 10 - This is TRULY where the movie shined its brightest! The storytelling could have went bad REALLY quick with this many great actors... and characters! Each and everyone of them can carry a story alone, but they were all tempered, wrapped, and delivered to us with enough depth to understand them and enough width to cheer them.

Tony Stark was CRAZY good in here!! This guy was the stubborn glue to this mix that refused to dry!! Mark Ruffalo made a GREAT Bruce Banner (I was afraid that he had some big shoes to fill after edward Norton). Cap stepped up as the focused leader that he should be. Thor was a GOD!!! Hulk SMASHED! Black Widows outsmarted an evil GOD, Hawkeye took down an entire battleship with an arrow, and Samuel L. Jackson cussed at the end!!! (We love you, Sam!!!)

The classic distraction of LOVE and romance was kept at bay making this a TOTAL masterpiece!!

Normally movies would force all of that 'gushy' stuff into the story for ratings and to attract female moviewatchers, but this time they said SCREW IT and gave us the love of BATTLE!!

The closest love you'll find in this movie is the love felt from Thor fighting the Hulk or Iron Man getting his butt handed to him by trying to take on Thor!

Presentation: 50!!! - The only thing that I can say here is... WOW!!

Did you stay untill the VERY end of the credits? So much said with so few words.

I was pleased to see that Joss Wedon was both the writer and the director. He is one of my favorite writers. I know him best from Televison where he wrote both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and also Angel. In comics I knew him from the X-Men and he was also one of the contributing writers of Marvel's Civil War series.

So finally we get a superhero movie written by a comic book writer who knows the characters inside and out. Typically Hollywood selects a screen writer who never picked up a comic book in his life and we end up with a movie where the hero is barely recognizable.

The plot sounds like a typical Avengers comic book which has always been one of my favorites. Sadly I am of the age where I actually bought issue number one off the rack for 12 cents. Oh if only I had that now, but who knew?

I have only seen the previews but my only gripe is that they have removed the trademark wings from Cap's mask and Thor never wears his cool winged helmet. Some sort of anti-wing theme conspiracy going on it seems.
Glad to see Hawkeye finally got some live action air play and the Black Widow too.

I would imagine that thors helmet would have limited the actors range of vision...that might make for difficult acting.

I also would like to have seen Hawkeye's cool purple and blue costume rather than just basic black. But at least they included him.

Other Avengers I would love to see make it to the big screen is the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, the Vision, the Black Panther

and of course the only founding member who did not yet get his own movie, Hank Pym aka Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Goliath/Yellow Jacket and now the Wasp. (sheesh the guy went through more name changes than I have)

I was especially a fan of his original incarnation the Ant-Man. I think with today's cgi effects it could be quite awesome.

Yes I know they embroidered on Cap's wings but that really is not the same thing is it? Kind of like seeing Batman with no ears.

I bet Thor's helmet didn't test well with female viewers. The current look is more what you'd see on the cover of a bodice ripper.

My favorite Avengers (not in the movie) were Beast and Wonderman.

Well the Beast was used in the 3rd X-Men movie which is owned by a different studio, so I guess he's out in the sequels. Wonderman is another story. Yeah he would be great on the big screen.

You're probably right about the helmet. Without it he looks a lot like Fabio. Lol.

Luke Cage-Power Man is another cool character that would translate well. In fact he should get his own film I think.

Marvel Girl too would look terrific on the big screen.

As far as villians go...Hmm. Ultron, Kang, Thanos, the Masters of Evil were sort of the ant-Avengers with Zemo, the Radioactive Man (no not the one from the Simpsons), the Black Knight, the Executioner and Enchantress.

Oh and what about Namor? He could be used in either a Fantastic Four movie or Avengers movie. One of my favorite old issues was the Namor/Hulk team up against the Avengers. I think that was issue 4 when they introduced Captain America.

Well the possibilities are endless aren't they. Glad to hear the first one turned out so well.

Unfortunately on my meager budget we cannot afford movies. That would be a luxury. So I'll have to wait for it to come to basic cable. I just saw Iron Man this year and loved it. Still waiting for the others.

Is it sad to say I only "just this week" saw the second hulk movie? I never saw the first at all...I saw Iron man one..but not Iron man two....did the $1.00 rental from Redbox to see Thor......

I didn't know that either. With Thanos making a screen presence, could this imply, 'The Infinite Gauntlet'?

That would be TOO much of an undertaking in my opinion.

I'm definitely looking forward to the introduction of the Black Panther. I'm wondering if they would dare to do any of the new Avengers such as Sentry?

They did a nice job merging the Ultimates universe with the mainstream Marvel universe, also.

This is the most beast movie ever i had the chance to see it and its amazing i got to see it in 3D 2 days ago!!
