I'm back and I've finally calmed down enough to rejoin the party here by bringing my shrewd point of view to the table about this newest Summer blockbuster.
Transformers 3 was NOT a movie! Transformers 3 was an elaborate experience. It was brutal for the haters (official critics mad because it didn't have flowers, tears, and a 'notebook' in it). It was a tear-jerker for the loyalist, mainly because Michael Bay went ALL out and destroyed everything and everyone that smelled like they needed it... this left a grim feeling for the hope of a fourth installment to this franchise... trilogy... epic... blessed light... cosmic singularity... etc.
Overall this movie was... good. No - it was dang good! No - it was AWESOMELY good!!! No - No - No - it was... walk away quietly from those that didn't get it, like it, or understand it before you strangle them, GOOD!!!
There was a definite balance between the separate story plots of Sam and the Autobots which was brought together with quick 'impactful' comic book styled storytelling. It was masterfully accomplished but here-in-fact is where standard critics find the greatest flaws with this movies and many others that are similar.
Let me explain...
Most 'official' critics are literary trained. Their degrees are in English or something related and they understand the differences between Contemporary Literature and Eclectic Literature. They know how to define a preposition and when to correctly use an adverb. They embrace semicolons and scoff at the misuse of hyphens. For them, a 'dialog' between two characters in a story is two people 'Dying on a Log' from old age because their conversation is SO boring!! These are the people that tell you to write out numbers in a story instead of using the number itself because that's a cardinal sin.
In comes comic book styled storytelling!! This is an art in itself. It is usually done by the untrained, unwanted, uncaring, and uncouth! It's usually done by those who simply have a story to tell. Its quick moving, short segmented, shallow when glanced at but deep when studied. Comic book styled storytelling's goal is to focus on the STORY first with the characters often becoming support mechanisms to reenforce the tale. It cradles an onomatopoeia like a best friend and proudly emphasize sound effects written such as 'BOOM' and 'CRAASSSHH!!' This is HERESY to the literary critic! It uses numbers and written numbers interchangeably to push its point rather than stick to their rules.
It whispers into the ears of the haters that alien robots that can turn into cars don't need 26 hours of character development with love and affection as long as they have cool-ass blasters and a double-sided laser axe that can rip spinal columns out by being lodged into the skulls of the enemy!! (Sorry, I lost control and got carried away)
Transformers 3 won't win any Oscars. Heck, it will be lucky for any high-end praise from critics, but for those who can swallow down the phenomenal and take this for what it is... a comic book styled story told in memory scarring way, then you are in for a toasty-treat!!
Years from now, people will have memories in time based around this movie.
Core Concept: 10 - an alien robot race bringing their planet INTO the Earth to suck up its resources and to make slaves.
Worldbuilding: 9 - Everything on Earth was great, but we only got a brief taste of Cybertron. They missed an opportunity to show cameos of many of the other Autobots that we've been missing (dinobots, Triple-changers, etc.).
Storytelling (Character Development): 9 - for a story of this scale, what they gave us was enough. We had some laughs, cries, betrayal, regret, despair, hopelessness, heroics, and EYE-CANDY ranging from the replacement lead female to hot cars!!
Presentation: 10 - EXCELLENTLY accomplished with multiple sub-climaxes that were visually staggering!! The collapsing building with the troops in it could have easily been the main ending of any movie and yet it was just another epic component to this story which left many of us screaming out our favorite parts after we left.
The only thing that I felt was missing in this movie was... Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in an extra clip after the credits. Oh... Wait... This isn't a Marvel Superheroes film?!? WHAT?!?
Crap!! I thought Optimus Prime was joining the Avengers for their movie next year!!
